THE PLASTIC SURGERY EXPLOSION

America's obsession with perfection is growing.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the number of people undergoing plastic surgery has tripled.

Plastic surgery, or anaplasty, is "any surgery concerned with therapeutic or cosmetic reformation of tissue," according to Princeton University's web site.

The University of Iowa plastic surgery web site explores how people have desired to change their appearances for thousands of years. The first society historians discovered who wanted to look different were the ancient Egyptians, who used heavy cosmetics to alter their look. For people living in India around 400 BC, plastic surgery was a common practice. Throughout time, people have changed their physical appearances and, with the technological advances in the past 50 years, plastic surgery has become an option for the masses.

Reality television plastic surgery makeover shows have increased the attractiveness and seeming availability for the American public.

“ There has been an increase in procedures not just for young people, but actually all across every demographic,” said former University of Iowa plastic surgery Dr. Albert Cram.

Cram warns any potential patient that education is very important when considering an operation.

"Be aware of the risks associated with surgery in general and particularly your own procedure. Research your doctor, talk to past patients. Choosing to get plastic surgery is a tremendous decision, so weigh the risks carefully before going under the knife," said Cram.
