Third Culture Kid: A Definition
A Third Culture Kid is a person who spent a significant portion of their childhood living in a country other than their home country. There are three main types of Third Culture Kids: Missionary Kids (MK's), Military Brats, and finally the "others" who don't fit into either of the first two categories.
Missionary Kids (MK's)
These are the children of missionaries from different religious denominations and can be found all over the world. They often create their own communities in the different countries where they find themselves. MK's will usually spend several years in the country where their parents are serving and then return back to their home country for a one year break or furlough before going back into the field.

Military Brats
Military Brats are kids whose parents serve in the army. These parents are often posted overseas in a variety of countries. Military brats frequently live in military compounds while they are overseas and form a community with the children of other army personnel. This is probably the group of kids who are moved around the most often of the three groups.

"Others"
These are the kids who are not a part of the missionary or military community. They are often the most overlooked group. These children may be moved overseas because of a parental job transfer, or basically any other reason under the sun.
