| What is a TCK? | My Story | Lydia's Story | Vicky's Story |
| Vicky Harbison is currently a sophomore majoring in International Relations at the UI. Her major may be the direct result of the time she spent living overseas while her dad traveled with the military. Vicky's Experience (In Her Own Words): Q: Describe your experience living overseas and how this experience impacted your life. A: My experience overseas was awesome. I lived in Hanau, Heidelberg, and Wiesbaden Germany, granted I was really young (1st to 8th grade). I was really lucky because my mom took me and my brothers traveling everywhere. We went to France, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Italy, Czech, Spain, and England, but when I was little I thought all the historical stuff like old castles and cathedrals were boring. Now its cool to be like "I've been there". The best thing about being overseas was the people. First off, I got to meet people from totally different cultures. My family was over there because my parents were in the army, so I also got to meet people form all over the US and made some life long friends.Q: What was it like adjusting to life back in the U.S. for you? A: Coming back to the States was total culture shock. I moved back to Alabama, and I didn't really know what to expect because I had left the US after kindergarten. The most surprising thing for me was the racial tension that still exists in the South. In a military community, there is not really any racial tension. It was kind of sad and definitely weird. |
