My Diabetes

A picture of me, Jeff Wallace. I turned 21 on March 7.

My name is Jeff Wallace and I have been diabetic since I was 13 years old. It was the summer of 1996, during the Olympics when they were in Atlanta when I came down with the disease, or as my doctor prefers to call it, a condition. I remember it so well because I was able to watch the last week of those Olympics while I was in the hospital.

Since then diabetes has been a part of my life. I really don't even think twice about anything involving my diabetes anymore. It has just become normal for me to prick my finger at least twice a day to check my blood sugar and to take at least two shots of insulin a day to regulate my blood sugar. But when I first started out it certainly was not normal or second nature. It took some time to learn how to live with it and deal with everything that came with the "condition" of being diabetic.

This web site will hopefully be informative for those looking for more information on diabetes, something that affects millions of people in the U.S. There will be personal things from me that I have encountered, such as my daily routine and some of the scary moments that have happened in my life because of diabetes. But it won't just be a focus on me. I also hope to eventually include lots of info on new technologies for diabetics, new treatments, and how the search for a cure is going. Other potential stuff would be special diets for diabetics and ways diabetes affects the human body.

So welcome to My Diabetes! I hope you find this information useful.
