Diabetes can have its complications no matter how much control you may have. Lows can happen unexpectedly, highs can happen if not enough insulin was given or too much food was eaten. Here I tell about the major complications that I have encountered since becoming diabetic. They are from my two serious low blood sugars and from when it was discovered that I had diabetes. Being diabetic, I always have to make sure that I am aware of my blood sugar. High blood sugar is bad because of the damage that it can cause by blocking blood flow to various parts of the body. Low blood sugar, is bad and dangerous because of the immediateness of going low. You can get to a point in a matter of minutes where you become unaware and unconscious. Reasons for going low can be too much insulin in the blood, not enough food/sugar for the insulin to break down, or exercising without making sure to eat something to sustain your blood sugar. My blood sugar has gone low enough where I have become either unaware or unconscious twice, since I have become diabetic. Both instances were pretty scary, especially since I had no idea that they happened until I became aware of my surroundings again. The funny thing about it, is that I was fine again within a matter of minutes. My blood sugar has gone high enough, long enough to where it has affected me, only once. The thing about that one time is, that is when I discovered I had diabetes. My blood sugar had been so high for so long that it finally got to me and caused me to go into a semi-diabetic coma. I did not recover from that instance as quickly as I did when my blood sugar went low, but of course, I had no idea that I even had diabetes at the time.
Serious high blood sugar and realizing I had diabetes-How I learned I had diabetes and my trip to the hospital, July 1996. Learning about my diabetes-I ended up being in the hospital for five days. Once I got my own room and was feeling better, I needed to learn how to live with what I had. Serious low blood sugar 1-The first time my blood sugar went really low. It happened at work, Thanksgiving 2000. Serious low blood sugar 2-The second time my blood sugar went really low. This happened at my aunt and uncle's house, Christmas Eve 2000.
