Spectators can find events throughout the
year
Spectators wanting to take part in Special
Olympics competitions can find a variety of choices throughout
the year.
Special needs individuals can take part
in a variety of activities specifically designed to meet their
needs.
One such event occurred last spring
with a basketball game.
The Waterloo Chariots faced various
university of Iowa athletes in a charity basketball game. One of
the beneficiaries of the game was Special
Olympics Iowa.
The crowd size did not compare to those that attend basketball games
at Carver Hawkeye Arena, but they cheered just as loud.
The Waterloo Chariots are no regular basketball team. They are an
organized wheelchair basketball team.

The Chariots showed their skill against UI athletes
who at times had trouble staying in their wheelchairs. The Chariots
outscored the UI athletes, and the referees reversed the score
at halftime. The Chariots caught up by the conclusion of the game
to
end in a tie.
This event shows the possibilities open to handicapped persons.
While the Waterloo Chariots are made up of physically handicapped
individuals, sporting events exist for the mentally handicapped also.
Wheelchair events are held during the spring games,
according to Rhonda Schwarzkopf. She said the first place winners
receive the opportunity to compete in the state summer games held
in Ames.
