Spring Games held at Coe College
in Cedar Rapids
The East Central region of Special
Olympics Iowa held their annual Spring Games April 17, 2004.
Over 500 athletes participated in the wide range of events.
East Central Iowa Special Olympics held their annual
Spring Games April 17, 2004, at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.
The blue sky and temperatures in the 80s made for a perfect day to
compete outdoors.
According to Sally Briggs, East Central Iowa Area director, more
than 500 athletes registered to compete in the games. This figure
rose from 336 athletes last year

Opening Ceremonies commenced at 9a.m. with many awards
given to athletes and volunteers. Briggs presented the award for
youngest athlete competing
to Stephen Teslik at just 8 years old. The oldest athlete competing
was 93 years old.
Briggs named Michelle Madorin and Diane Hodge coaches of the
year.
Many events took place at the Coe College track. Athletes
competed in many Olympic games, as well as, specially designed games
for
Special Olympics. Events included the men’s and women’s
100m dash, wheelchair races, and men’s and women’s
softball throw.
Events also took place at the Coe College pool area.
Events included a 50yd freestyle, 100yd backstroke, and a 100yd
individual
medley.
Many athletes advanced to the state games in Ames , Iowa held
from May 20 - 22.
